Description

Lucy Honeychurch, accompanied by her vigilant guardian, Charlotte Bartlett, makes her first foray into the world, touring Italy and discovering a country very different to the English countryside she was brought up in. Torn between two lovers, she has to make a decision that will transform her from a girl to a woman.

A talented pianist with a good brain, Lucy finds herself between two lovers. One, George Emerson, is an earthy, kind man, appreciative of all living creatures and beauty in all of its forms. Cecil Vyse, on the other hand, is sophisticated and classy, although he treats people and things more like objects at his disposal, rather than as amazing beings, or as possessing captivating qualities or wonder. Lucy has to choose between her heart and her head in an uplifting and moving tale about the difficulties which lie in ‘growing up’ and the importance of making the right choices to ensure future happiness. Perfect for audio, ‘A Room With a View’ is full of little details which evoke sounds and sense of place, so a listener feels that they are traveling Italy with Lucy, and sharing in her pleasures and pitfalls on the return home.

Reviews

AudioFile Magazine...
Forster's classic recounts the adventures of English tourists who meet in an Italian pensione and follows their intersecting lives when they return to England. While in Italy, Lucy Honeychurch falls in love with George Emerson, but when she returns to Edwardian England, her long-term friend, Cecil Vyse, proposes marriage. Juliet Stevenson reads this novel in soft, quietly enunciated tones. With a minimum of fuss and subtle differentiation of characters, Stevenson brings out the romance and tension of the story, as well as the society that Lucy inhabits. As Lucy struggles with appearances and the social mores of her time, she must decide whom she loves and how she will tell the other of her decision. Lucy's world comes to life through Stevenson's narration. M.B.K. (c) AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine
